Two ships passing in the night

"Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing;
Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness;
So on the ocean of life we pass and speak one another,
Only a look and a voice; then darkness again and a silence."

This poem is about people who meet for a brief but intense moment and then part, never to see each other again. These people are like two ships that greet each other with flashing lights and then sail off into the night.
It seems to me like the essence of modern day life. We meet an part again. Our course is determined by our endless desire to see more and discover everything. We are trapped in the believe that if we stay and rest we would miss out something. The endless desire to alter our status quo blows wind into our sails. We can not help but go on. Even if the encounter is intense and magical we keep on going in hope of finding something better. There might be a ship out there that suits more to me, we think.
As a result of this endless voyage we are trapped in an infinite vicious circle. And the desire that keeps us going is actually growing; never to be satisfied never to be redeemed: the Janus face of our existence. Two faces of our destiny: the same and still contradictory. Beginning and end of our agony an perpetual mystery.

"Oh night thou was my guide
of night more loving than the rising sun
Oh night that joined the lover
to the beloved one
transforming each of them into the other"
The dark night of the soul, Loreena McKennitt

the song is about two people who meet in a brief but intense moment in the night and from then on become a bit of each other forever...
if they part or not, its not a matter of interest anymore : )
